Why should I use the IKMB Hybrid Computing Service and what are the benefits?
Speed

The Hybrid Computing Service is a fast (due to GPU/FPGA hardware acceleration), secure, convenient and privacy-aware bioinformatics web service provided by the Institute of Clinical Molecular Biology, Kiel University, Germany.

Security and convenience

To use our web service, you only need to register for an account with a valid e-mail address and a strong password for authentication. To increase security, it is possible to register a key device (smartphone, Yubikey, etc.) for 2-factor authentication (2FA).
Simply upload your files, add a few options, click “submit” and watch your job being processed.

Privacy protection

As genome-wide data as well as user behaviour when using internet websites is personal data, we ensure the requirements of "Privacy by Design". How we comply with the rules of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union (EU) is explained in detail on our data protection policy website.
In summary, we do not use the email address provided for any purpose other than job and account management, we do not use the uploaded genetic data for other purposes than the execution of the analysis request, and nobody except the user herself/himself has access to the data. All data remain locally on our university server in Kiel, Germany, and all uploaded files and results files (except log and status files) are automatically deleted 7 days after completion of the respective job. No data is passed on to third-party services, the website is advertising-free and does not store any cookies on the user's computer (apart from a technically necessary session cookie). For reasons of transparency, the user can also download all personal data (i.e., email address, last activity timestamp and job metadata - that’s it!) stored on our server in a single file with one mouse click. All user-related data is immediately deleted if the user decides to delete her/his account, which the user can do directly in the user administration.

Can I use your web service in any published work?

Frequently asked questions

Our service is freely available. You only need to register with email and a password you choose yourself. After completing the registration and login, you can start imputation jobs (i.e. upload data, select parameters, etc). When a job is completed, we will send you a notification by email. When a job is finished, all imputed data will be deleted automatically after 7 days.

Our service complies with the European Union (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Please read our data protection policy, which outlines all rights and obligations.

Please register to create an account.

Since our storage space is limited, we have to make sure that output data is deleted when it is no longer needed. Please remove the data of completed jobs yourself if you have already downloaded results.

Our service performs a pre-screening to ensure that the files you upload can be processed correctly. Javascript can be enabled in your browser settings.

We permanently store only user authentication data, i.e. email address and password. Your data will not be passed on to third parties without your consent and is not intended for the future. The genetic data that you provide to us may require the consent of the data subject and will only be processed as intended and temporarily stored on our server for this purpose. You can delete your account and all your data yourself if you no longer wish to use our service. Please read our data protection policy, which outlines all rights and obligations.

All information about the algorithms used here can be found in our EagleImp software as well as EagleImp-Web publication (see above).
Two-factor Authentication (2FA)

2-factor authentication is an additional security method to protect user accounts: In addition to the password, a trusted device must be used when logging in.

We currently support using a 'YubiKey' or similar dongle for authentication. The YubiKey is a compact security token that you can register for any number of websites and services. Unlike the 'mail.de authenticator', where you type a 6-digit code from your smartphone, you simply connect a small USB device, e.g. the Yubikey, to your computer and press the button on it (if the key with button is used) and you are logged in. This procedure is very easy and also extremely secure.
